According to Elon Musk, Model S is more of a guys’ thing so he wanted to launch a product for women. Thus, the Model X was born, or at least conceptualized. The vehicle is a mini-van, having a different look and feel from the previously launched Tesla Motors vehicles. Essentially, they’re both almost the same, except for the fact that Model  X is made for women.

Women in the auto industry of the US are one of the keenest buyers of SUVs. Therefore, Elon Musk wants to capture this fast growing market segment. Last year, Tesla called to its headquarters a female focus group asking them which particular parts of the vehicle looked more appealing to them. The notion of women buying SUVs in the US is further endorsed by the fact that they were responsible for more than 50% of the orders.

The Model X SUV has a seating capacity for 7 . The vehicle is all-wheel drive and goes from 0 to 60 mph in just under 5 seconds. Owing to its bigger size and more mass, Model X will not be able to travel as far as Model S on a single battery charge. In fact, it is expected to travel distances from 170 to 230 miles depending on the size of batteries installed.

It will also be chargeable via a power source in the driver’s garage. Moreover, it would be able to use any of the free 450 supercharger network stations nationwide that can charge the vehicle in one hour. Unlike its predecessors, the Model X will be the only one to sport falcon doors.

Model X would cost around $ 70,000 with 20,000 orders already placed. At this rate, it seems making the demand is not a problem, but rather, it’s meeting the demand with sufficient supplies that would be tricky. X’s timely delivery and production would be two of the major challenges that Tesla Motors need to smartly tackle.

With the market already full of companies producing SUVs, it would take a lot of consistency in the part of  Model X to keep the attention, and hopefully, dominate the market.
