Tesla Discontinuing Model S 60 and 60D
The all-electric company announced March 18 that it is discontinuing its Model S60 and 60D (all-wheel drive). The motive behind this step is ‘’to simplify the ordering process for customers.’’ The company stated that the model is not doing very well, thus, will be removed from the lineup since most customers go for an equivalent to the Model S 75 kWh.
“Customers who still want the opportunity to own a 60 kWh Model S will have until April 16, 2017, to place their order,’’ Tesla broadcasted.
One year ago, Tesla introduced the Model S 60 kWh battery as a more affordable option to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, and for a fee, they could unlock an extra 15 kWh from the battery with a software update – this feature was considered confusing for potential clients when purchasing a Tesla car.
Analysts believe the discontinuation might be the result of a desire to cut unnecessary spending and lead the way for Model X, which starts off with the 75-kWh option and, on the other hand, to differentiate between the ranges and pricings between Model S and the less expensive Model 3 arriving later this year.
According to the Los Angeles Times, ‘’There are other reasons Tesla might want to stop selling the 60 and 60D: They could compete with the Model 3, a mass-market car with a base price expected below $40,000.’’
The 60 and 60D versions have a stated range of 210 to 218 miles before a recharge is necessary. Also, a refined performance and safety measures thanks to it’s all electric powertrain. It is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.
In addition to numerous features: an adaptive lighting with LED dynamic turning lights, a bio-weapon defense mode including an air filtration that removes at least 99.97% of exhaust pollution, bacteria, and diverse contaminants. It offers the best of technology, a 17-inch touchscreen with adjustable day and night modes for excellent visibility. The screen provides mobile connectivity to utilize with maps, online radio, google search, with access to a camera, energy estimation, calendar, personalization and cabin controls.
