Battery Day Announced

Exciting news folks! A date for Tesla’s long-awaited Battery Day has been tentatively scheduled. Elon Musk tweeted on June 22 that Battery Day will take place in principle on September 15. The event will coincide with the company’s Annual Shareholders Meeting. Musk also stated that the event will include a tour of the battery cell production system.

Musk confirmed the event will take place at Tesla’s Fremont Gigafactory.

Postponement merry-go-round

The highly-anticipated Battery Day event has experienced several delays due to unforeseen circumstances, namely the COVID-19 pandemic. It was initially scheduled to take place during May, but Musk announced its postponemen. He initially suggested a webcast during June and an in-person event for later. The webcast never took place and speculation has been rife as to when the event will take place.

Well we have an answer now!

During Tesla’s 2020 Q1 earnings call, Musk declared that Battery Day will be one of the most important events in the company’s history. It has been rumored that Tesla will introduce longer-lasting, more efficient batteries that will bring the cost of electric cars on par with standard fossil-fuel vehicles.

Single crystal cathode cells may trigger a new Industrial Revolution

Dalhousie University academic and Head of the Tesla Battery Research Team Jeff Dahn, filed a single crystal cathode patent that can potentially produce more efficient and longer-lasting batteries.

Back in September 2019, Dahn published a paper in the Journal of the Electrochemical Society regarding the significance of the single crystal cathode. The paper states “cells of this type should be able to power an electric vehicle for over 1.6 million kilometers”. The paper also asserts that those cells can “last at least two decades in grid energy storage”.

As we wait for Battery Day, we ask ourselves the following questions: Are we actually less than 3 months away from a watershed moment in the history of the automotive industry? Will Battery Day usher in a new Industrial Revolution?

One can only hope so!
